Air Force continues PFAS cleanup near former Reese air base
Firefighting foam used for nearly 30 years contaminated water for hundreds of residents

Chemicals meant to help put out fires continue to spark concerns when it comes to health.
The Air Force used aqueous film forming foam during fire training exercises at Reese Air Force Base from the 1970s to the base’s closure in 1997. Traditional AFFF contains Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS), including PFOS and PFOA, also known as “forever chemicals”.
“They’re called forever chemicals because they don’t naturally degrade, at least any time in our lifetime,” said Paul Carroll, an Air Force program manager.
