Army Corps to update Sayreville residents on munitions site probe

SAYREVILLE – Residents will have another chance to learn about and ask questions regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' ongoing investigation into the former Morgan General Ordnance Depot, a sprawling World War I-era military site that once occupied thousands of acres across parts of Middlesex County.

Army officials said geophysical mapping surveys have been completed and crews are preparing to excavate selected underground metallic anomalies identified during the investigation. Residents whose properties were previously surveyed are encouraged to attend and ask questions about the process.

The former Morgan General Ordnance Depot covered approximately 3,156 acres in Sayreville, South Amboy and Old Bridge. The site is tied to the catastrophic Morgan explosion of Oct. 4, 1918, when a series of blasts and fires at an artillery shell-loading plant killed about 100 people, injured hundreds more and scattered military munitions across the region.
