PFAS testing continues at former KI Sawyer Air Force Base

The community showed up to discuss ongoing environmental work in K.I. Sawyer. The Former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base Restoration Advisory Board revealed updates about PFAS testing around the former base on Wednesday. EGLE Senior Project Manager Kenneth Heitkamp said the base’s remedial investigation is assessing the extent of the contaminants.

“How contaminated is the site, how far does this contamination go, and then we can prioritize where we want the clean-up to take place, and how long that clean-up will take to give the public a good idea of how long the contamination will be here,” he said.

The meeting included the Air Force Civil Engineer Center, EGLE, the MDHHS and the local water department. AFCEC Program Coordinator Isamar Nieves-Cancel said it takes group action to protect the community.
