West Plains residents seek answers on PFAS well contamination

AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — West Plains residents gathered at a community meeting on Monday evening to get answers about PFAS contamination and what officials are doing about it.

According to the Washington State Department of Ecology, groundwater tests showed unsafe PFAS levels in many private residential wells near Fairchild Air Force Base and Spokane International Airport. The contamination was tied to historical use of specialized firefighting foam.

The Spokane Regional Health District reported that PFAS in drinking water can lead to higher cholesterol levels, blood pressure problems in pregnancy, and other health concerns.

The President of the West Plains Water Coalition said the goal of the meeting was to give people a place to learn more and hear directly from others in the community.

"We estimate that only half of the homes in the West Plains will actually turn out to have a contaminated well. So it's important to find out which category you're in. Your water is good. Your water is not good," said John Hancock.
