Brownfields 2003:
Growing a Greener America

The 8th Annual National Brownfields Conference, Brownfields 2003: Growing a Greener America will take place in Portland, Oregon, October 27-29, at the Oregon Convention Center. This conference is THE premier forum for discovering solutions to redevelopment challenges, examining successful projects, and exploring ramifications of the recently-signed federal legislation.

This FREE conference is the largest and most comprehensive event of its kind in the country. Attendance this year is expected to exceed 3,500. New this year, ICMA and a selection of other organizations are offering credits (or equivalent) for continuing education to their members who attend.

The Call for Ideas—which is intended to generate suggested topics, forums, and possible speakers for conference sessions—is available at www.brownfields2003.org. The deadline for submitting ideas to ICMA is June 17, 2003.

Brownfields 2003: Growing a Greener America will include educational sessions, mobile workshops, roundtable discussions, the prestigious Phoenix Awards for achievement of excellence in brownfields redevelopment, and an extensive exhibit hall of private sector, government, and nonprofit vendors. If you would like to get your organization’s name out to this varied audience, there are opportunities to endorse or sponsor the conference, as well as an array of advertising opportunities.

ICMA is offering a limited number of scholarships for individuals interested in attending the Brownfields 2003 conference but unable to attend without financial assistance for travel. To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants must be affiliated with or a representative of a local government, state or tribal government, community organization, environmental justice organization, or not-for-profit entity.

Conference attendees who are arriving early or staying late will be able to enjoy any of several planned pre- and post-conference activities. From walking and biking tours of scenic Portland, to wine tours and explorations of local pubs, numerous entertaining activities will be available. Find out more by signing up to receive regular e-newsletters announcing these outings and other pertinent information on www.brownfields2003.org.
