Dec. 3 -- EPA clarifies policy on natural attenuation

U.S. EPA posted on the World Wide Web a clarification of its policy
regarding the use of monitored natural attenuation for the remediation of
contaminated soil and groundwater at sites regulated under the agency's
Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response. Remediation projects
covered by the directive include those conducted under EPA's Superfund,
corrective action and underground storage tank programs. Although the
directive does not contain technical guidance or new regulations, it
should be used beginning immediately to guide development of proposals,
evaluations and agency approvals of natural attenuation remedies, EPA
said. The directive may be downloaded in a variety of formats on the World
Wide Web at http://www.epa.gov/OUST/directiv/d9200417.htm .
