Subject: | A Citizen's Conference on Brownfield Cleanup |
The Cleanup Coalition and the University of Maryland Environmental Law Clinic invite you to attend A CITIZEN'S CONFERENCE ON BROWNFIELD CLEANUP on Thursday, April 30, 1998 at Westminster Hall on Fayette and Greene Streets in Baltimore, Maryland. The Conference will run from approximately 8:30 until 4:00 and will feature a variety of speakers including Maryland Senator Brian Frosh. The Cleanup Coalition is a new organization of community and environmental representatives concerned about the implementation of the Voluntary Cleanup Program in Maryland. The Coalition will advocate citizen interests regarding the broad policy issues that arise during implementation of the program, participate in the public comment process at individual sites, and sponsor educational and organizational meetings for citizens. The University of Maryland Environmental Law Clinic is legal counsel to the Coalition. In the next few years, the Maryland Voluntary Cleanup Program must tackle some very important issues. Cleanup must be good enough to protect public health without becoming so complicated that companies refuse to participate. Citizens must play an active role in reviewing cleanup plans that can be highly technical and difficult to understand. Companies must understand that people live near brownfields sites and are justifiably concerned about their health and protection of the environment. This conference is designed as a training session that will help citizens advocate for themselves and their families. It will also give citizens an opportunity to join the Cleanup Coalition and set an agenda for its future activities. Registration fee is $15, which includes a citizen's manual, box lunch, and other refreshments. If you don't wish to reserve lunch, the fee is only $10. To register or for more information, please call Laura Mrozek at (410) 706-8157 or e-mail her at lmrozek@law.umaryland.edu | |
