ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE GRANTS FROM NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SCIENCE DEADLINE: FULL PROPOSALS ARE DUE OCTOBER 27, 1998 Full proposals are due October 27, 1998 for grants under the Environmental Justice Partnerships for Communication Program of the National Institute of Environmental Health Science (NIEHS). This program seeks methods for linking members of a community who are directly affected by adverse environmental conditions with researchers and health care providers. Together, this partnership will develop appropriate research strategies that address environmental health problems of concern. Potential activities include but are not limited to the following: 1) development of efficacious methods for risk communication in low-income and underserved communities unfavorably impacted by environmental hazards; 2) development of community-based, culturally sensitive educational programs to mitigate adverse health effects from environmental toxicants in low-income communities; 3) community-based training to increase environmental health literacy in such neighborhoods; 4) training and educating neighborhood health care professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders having anetiology related to exposure to hazardous substances; and 5) development of a research agenda to measure population exposure or to quantify human health impacts. Five grants of up to $200,000 per year and extending up to four years are expected to be available.
