Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] New Report on Phytoremediation |
Phytoremediation is the use of plants, including trees, grasses and aquatic species, for removal of hazardous contaminants from the environment. In the past 5 years or so, phytoremediation has begun to attract a great deal of attention from site owners, regulators, and the consulting/contracting community as a potentially cost-effective remedial technology. The technology is being used by a growing number of specialty firms and consulting/engineering firms, and has been used at several Brownfields sites. Potential applications include the use of deep-rooted trees to intercept contaminated groundwater or landfill leachate, the use of "hyperaccumulator" plants to remove heavy metals from soil, and the ability of plants to enhance and speed up natural microbial biodegradation (including natural attenuation). The 1999 U.S. market for phytoremediation is approximately $30-49 million, with growth projected to $100-170 million by 2002 and to $235-400 million by 2005. We have published a report on phytoremediation entitled "U.S. and International Markets for Phytoremediation, 1999-2000", which includes technology descriptions, profiles of over 40 U.S. companies and 25 foreign firms offering phytoremediation services, capsule summaries of leading non-profit research groups and international research consortia studying phytoremediation, case studies of several dozen phytoremediation projects, and in-depth analyses of market sectors to which phytoremediation is applicable. The Executive Summary of this report is available at www.channel1.com/dglassassoc/INFO/phy99exc.htm, and the Table of Contents can be found at www.channel1.com/dglassassoc/INFO/phy99tbl.htm. Information on how to obtain a copy of this report is also available at these sites. Please feel free to contact me for more information, or with any questions. David J. Glass, Ph.D. D.
