Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Chicago Schools |
In the past I have reported about California's growing concern about the construction of schools on Brownfields sites. I have just heard, from regulators there, that Illinois has experienced similar problems. As a result, in 1999 the Illinois legislature enacted a bill (P.A. 91-0442) that deals with the construction of public schools in Chicago Area. This bill amends the Environmental Protection Act and prohibits a person from commencing construction on real property of a building intended for use as an educational facility unless (i) a Phase I Environmental Audit is obtained, (ii) a Phase II Environmental Audit is obtained if the Phase I Environmental Audit discloses a regulated substance, and (iii) the property is enrolled in the Site Remediation Program and remedial action that the Agency approves is completed if the Phase II Environmental Audit discloses the presence of a release. -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 222B View St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/968-1126 lsiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To read CPEO's archived Brownfields messages visit http://www.cpeo.org/lists/brownfields If this email has been forwarded to you and you'd like to subscribe, please send a message to cpeo-brownfields-subscribe@igc.topica.com ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ___________________________________________________________ T O P I C A The Email You Want. http://www.topica.com/t/16 Newsletters, Tips and Discussions on Your Favorite Topics | |
