Olympic site not alone in needing a cleanup The Toronto Star http://thestar.com May 29, 2001 Toronto's bid for the Olympics put the focus on the city's derelict land, the contaminated industrial "brownfields" that blot our neighbourhoods. The biggest of these brownfields, the Portlands, is to be the site of the Olympics and its cleanup costs are hardly likely to stand in the way of restoring the land for the 2008 Games. But Greater Toronto has some 4,500 hectares of contaminated lands, the equivalent of 30 High Parks. What of the other less-Olympian sites? Last fall, then Municipal Affairs Minister Tony Clement set up a panel to advise on some of the crunchy issues that have prevented redevelopment. Who should pay for the cleanup of properties whose owners often have long-since abandoned them? What should the limits be on future liability.
