House to Focus on Brownfields

WASHINGTON (AP) - House lawmakers next week plan to jump-start a bill meant to help finance the cleanup of more than 500,000 abandoned industrial sites and spur developers to build on the properties. 

A bipartisan group of House leaders promised Friday to recycle the ``brownfields'' legislation by combining two unanimously approved measures - one in the House, one in the Senate - for votes as soon as possible. 

``The Bush administration would be absolutely thrilled if this historic piece of legislation passes the House,'' Chris Paulitz, a spokesman for Environmental Protection Agency (news - web sites) Administrator Christie Whitman, said Friday.
