Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] ICMA Offers Environmental Risk Communication Training |
ICMA Offers Environmental Risk Communication Training Through a cooperative grant from the Environmental Protection Agency, ICMA is preparing to host two one-and-a-half day regional workshops on environmental risk communication training. The training will address environmental risk communication among local government officials, risk assessors, community members, and the private sector, involving environmental contamination and the associated health risks. ICMA hopes to bring together approximately 30 individuals to participate in each workshop, which will be interactive and designed to address participants’ specific issues. Who Should Attend Municipal staff and concerned community residents impacted by environmental pollutants that pose a potential risk are invited to participate. Also business representatives who have been involved with or are concerned about environmental contamination and risk issues are encouraged to attend. To participate in one of the regional training workshops, complete and return the attached form by Monday, March 10, 2003, to Dorothy Morrison by fax, 202/962-3605; or mail to Dorothy Morrison, Project Manager, ICMA, 777 North Capitol Street NE, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20002-4201. Meeting date and location of each workshop has yet to be determined. Further information will be provided upon receipt of your interest form. A limited number of travel scholarships to attend a workshop will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis, so respond early. Direct questions to dmorrison@icma.org. What Is Effective Risk Communication Effective risk communication is a two-way exchange between the local government and community that includes providing information to the public in an understandable manner about toxic substances in the environment, adverse health and welfare effects due to environmental releases, and exposure information. This dialogue can help to alleviate anxieties about environmental health risks, assist impacted communities in taking steps to reduce risks, and help create a better-educated and engaged public in understanding redevelopment of hazardous sites and any adverse health and welfare effects of materials present in solid waste.
