Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Unforeseen Risk in Mountain View |
Mountain View (California) Voice Friday, May 9, 2003 Special Report: Unforeseen Risk Last fall, Mountain View found itself in the national spotlight after officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that trichloroethene (TCE) -- a pollutant common in the city's ground water -- is 65 times more dangerous than previously thought. Ten years ago, when cleanup systems were put in place to remove the chemical, no one imagined it would present itself as a bigger problem ten years down the road. In a two-part special report, the Voice explores the legacy of local Superfund cleanups. This week, part one profiles a community built over contaminated ground where TCE is moving into homes. Next week, part two will look at how polluters trying to keep TCE out of the air get rid of the toxin.
