No Shenandoah homes need ventilation, EPA says

SHENANDOAH -- The Environmental Protection Agency won't install
ventilation systems in any of 14 homes where it tested air last week in
East Fishkill, an official said Wednesday. 

In the tests, 13 homes showed no more than trace concentrations of
tetrachloroethylene, PCE, or trichloroethylene, TCE, the two chemicals
found in the groundwater in the neighborhood. Concentrations were
measured in parts per billion, or parts per trillion of contamination. 

One home had higher concentrations of the chemical in a basement, but
not in the living area, spokesman Jim Haklar said. 

Tests were done with a mobile laboratory called a trace atmospheric gas
analyzer, which gives real-time results. Follow-up tests are being
analyzed in a laboratory, and final results could be eight weeks in
coming.
