Concerns over solvent

Two forums focus on cleaning up pollution from old Gates plant

Dueling forums on the subject of cleaning up contamination left behind
by the old Gates Rubber factory were held an hour apart Thursday.

Participants at the first, organized by a labor group, said the
monitoring standards used by state and federal environmental agencies
underestimate the hazard posed by solvents that leaked into the soil and
have drifted toward the west Washington Park neighborhood.

The second, organized by Denver City Councilwoman Kathleen MacKenzie,
countered that the redeveloper in charge of the land has responsibly
monitored the contamination, which has yet to be proven to be a threat.

A plume of the solvent trichlorethylene, or TCE, was discovered by
workers building an overpass on Interstate 25 in 2002. The chemical is
considered carcinogenic and can vaporize up through soil, through crawl
spaces and foundation cracks into nearby homes.
