DEP trying to find extent of TCE in Collegeville

COLLEGEVILLE -- A state investigation into air quality complaints in the
Pottstown area has taken an unexpected turn. It has spawned a second
investigation into high levels of a potential carcinogen in the air of
the Collegeville area. 

The path from air pollution to groundwater contamination from Pottstown
to Collegeville is a little twisted, but was outlined at a meeting
Tuesday at which the Department of Environmental Protection explained
the findings in its initial report.

A handful of Collegeville residents, including Mayor Dennis Parker, were
on hand at the meeting, held at the west campus of Montgomery County
Community College in Pottstown.

Following up on complaints about potential air pollution in the
Pottstown area, the DEP in 2002 set up an air sampling station at
Pottstown High School.

Although air samples taken there, and from a mobile testing unit, found
traces of 37 volatile organic compounds in the air out of 55 for which
the DEP tested, the substance which triggered the most interest among
state officials was high levels of trichloroethylene, better known as TCE.
