Chemicals detected on W. Side strike fears Residents in the area where 'lower-level' contaminations have been found are said to face 'no immediate risk.' BRAD BRANAN Tucson Citizen October 2, 2004 JoeAnn Lanier lost her parents, her husband and a brother to cancer. She thinks they were poisoned by TCE (trichloroethylene), which contaminated South Side water for more than 30 years until the early 1980s, according to one government estimate. Officials took too long to respond to the tainted water, she said. "Imagine going home and your family is gone. That's what it's been like," said Lanier, owner of Lanier Enterprise and Realty. "It's been like war. The fact is, we've been fighting a war for years." The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality recently learned that two chemicals found in high concentrations on the South Side, TCE and PCE (perchloroethylene), have been found in two West Side subdivisions. Lanier and others involved in the South Side case hope the official response is more swift and effective on the West Side. ,,, for the entire article, see http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/index.php?page=local&story_id=100204_a4_tcemain RELATED STORY West Side soil tests begin Monday TEYA VITU Tucson Citizen October 2, 2004 The state will start taking soil samples Monday near the Silver Creek I and II subdivisions on the West Side to see whether the ground is contaminated with cancer-causing chemicals.
