Endicott group wants second opinion on water Some dissatisfied with report on safety BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) October 18, 2004 ENDICOTT -- An Endicott community group has asked a team of federal scientists to recalculate health risks associated with chemical mixtures in the village's drinking water, after the original assessment excluded several harmful chemicals, including trichloroethylene. The scientists say they will try, but it's a difficult task because safety guidelines for some chemicals are lacking or under debate. A report from the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry concluded that traces of industrial solvents in the village water supply since 1980 posed a "very low to low cancer risk." It also stated the chemical mixture "is not expected to cause noncancerous harmful effects." Representatives from the agency presented a draft of the study, called a health consultation, to the Endicott Stakeholders Planning Group on Tuesday.
