View-Master health study seeks funds

State health officials are hoping they can squeeze funds for a broad health study of former View-Master plant employees from Congress’ lame-duck session this fall.

Oregon’s congressional delegation is pushing for $700,000 or more to pay for a study of nearly 25,000 former Mattel View-Master employees who were exposed for three decades to the dangerous chemical trichloroethyline (TCE) in the Beaverton plant’s drinking water.

Epidemiologists with Oregon’s Department of Human Services say they need at least $4 million during the next three years to fund a full health study. Its findings could help determine how TCE affected the lives and health of people who worked at the Mattel View-Master plant on Southwest Hall Boulevard.

A draft report on the issue completed in June found that former View-Master employees died at rates sometimes six to eight times higher from kidney cancers and other digestive system illnesses than the general state population.
