Standards for toxins supported Manning: State action needed By Dan Shapley Poughkeepsie Journal (NY) November 16, 2004 With a protracted national health risk assessment in limbo, the state Legislature should set its own guideline for dealing with a toxic chemical that has infiltrated the air in homes north of Hopewell Junction and around New York and the nation. That was the conclusion from Assemblyman Patrick Manning, R-East Fishkill, the ranking Republican on the Assembly Standing Committee on Environmental Conservation, after a hearing Monday in Endicott, Broome County. Two East Fishkill residents and Dutchess County Legislator Marge Horton, R-East Fishkill, all of whom attended the hearing, agreed the guideline should be revised to better protect health. "The levels that they're setting for the people in New York aren't anywhere near the levels in other places," said Debra Hall, an East Fishkill resident whose water and air are contaminated, and who testified Monday. "This should not be. We deserve the same kind of protection, especially because this has to do with health, especially because this has to do with children." ... for the entire article, see http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/tuesday/localnews/stories/lo111604s1.shtml -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Brownfields mailing list Brownfields@list.cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org/mailman/listinfo/brownfields | |
