Milford condos cleanup hits $750,000 Brian McCready New Haven Register December 10, 2004 MILFORD - The state Department of Environmental Protection has rung up a $750,000 tab at Caswell Cove condominiums as costs to install a ventilation system for Building 500 have swelled to $400,000, an agency spokesman said. But DEP spokesman Matthew Fritz said Thursday the good news is that crews have begun installing ventilation in Building 500 that is designed to ensure trichloroethylene contamination found near the building does not enter the living space. The bad news is the cost of the work is eight times what it typically costs to install such a ventilation system. Earlier this year, the DEP spent $350,000 to install similar ventilation units in Caswell Cove?s buildings 100, 200, 300, and 400, where contamination had been discovered. There are 14 buildings on the site. "Obviously we?re committed to making sure the residents of the complex are safe," Fritz said. "It?s a necessary precaution. It?s unfortunate it?s this expensive." Fritz said the ventilation system for Building 500 is more expensive because of a lack of crawl space under the building, space the other four buildings have. Also, because the design for the system was so complicated, the work will not be completed until early January. ...
