Porter Record-Journal (CT) January 13, 2005 CHESHIRE - A new report from the state and federal governments has confirmed the earlier assertion of the state Department of Public Health that the contamination of the town's groundwater in the 1970s and 1980s did not cause an increase in the incidence of cancer in town. According to the report released Dec. 23, while residents were exposed to elevated levels of two hazardous chemicals in the past, "there is no indication that cancer rates in Cheshire are significantly elevated." The exposure in the past came from contamination to the groundwater from several industrial sites. The report includes several sites, including the former Alling Lander Co. property at 300 E. Soil and groundwater at the site became contaminated with toxins that can be carcinogenic, including pesticides, PCBs, metals, dry cleaning solvents, degreasers, and semi-volatile compounds. Other sites contributing to contamination include the Airpax building (also known as Siemens), County Wide Construction, Ball and Socket and the municipal landfill. ...
