EPA: Little solvent near Gates By Lou Kilzer Rocky Mountain News (CO) January 13, 2005 There is little evidence that an industrial solvent has polluted groundwater outside the site of the old Gates rubber plant in Denver, the Environmental Protection Agency said Wednesday. The EPA dug 16 test wells near residential areas after high levels of TCE were found at the Gates site. Only one well contained TCE at levels above government standards, the agency told a City Council committee. The suspect well - just north of Interstate 25 on Logan Street - had high TCE levels only at the deepest part of the test well. That is good news, council members were told, since TCE is heavier than water and tends to sink, not rise. The news is "interesting, but doesn't settle the matter," said longtime former Gates-area resident David Metsch. His daughter, Sarah, was born in 1980 with spina bifida, a major birth defect in the formation of the spine. Metsch says there have been at least three other spina bifida cases near the Gates plant and wonders if TCE may have been more of a factor many years ago. ...
