Air tests to assess pollution in Norwich BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) January 19, 2005 NORWICH -- Technicians will begin testing air inside 25 to 30 properties in Norwich this month to see whether they are tainted by fumes from underground pollution, an official with the state Department of Environmental Conservation said Monday. The work is necessary after tests taken in the fall showed gases from trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,1 trichloroethane (TCA) in the ground near the homes, said John Okesson, a technician with the DEC and manager of the project. The properties generally are within 2 acres of the intersection of Rexford Street and a railway operated by New York Susquehanna and Western Railway Corp. The chemicals are coming from the edge of the railway, about 200 feet north of the intersection, according to DEC records. The pollution -- solvents commonly used by many industries -- tend to evaporate and follow the path of least resistance through the ground. Sometimes they travel through conduits, pipe beds and air pockets and enter homes through a process called vapor intrusion. ...
