N.Y. tests Town of Owego sites for pollutants Chemicals similar to those in Endicott BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) January 31, 2005 Scientists have begun checking to see whether pollution at large manufacturing sites east of Owego is causing problems similar to those in Endicott, where traces of solvents are seeping into buildings and water. The sites are now owned by Sanmina-SCI on Route 17C, where chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have seeped into the ground. IBM Corp., which once operated one of the sites called the Broadway Complex, is also involved in the investigation, according to records from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Samples were collected last month inside Sanmina, which makes printed circuit boards, to see whether pollution under the site is affecting air quality, said Mary Jane Peachey, a regional scientist with the DEC. The state is awaiting analysis of the samples, expected in four to six weeks, to determine what the next steps might be. ...
