Contamination fears fuel ACE conference

LOWER POTTSGROVE -- As Occidental Chemical prepares the closure of its
plastics plant, local residents and the federal government should demand
the most thorough accounting and cleanup of the pollution at the
276-acre site, suggests an environmental advocate. 

Once OxyChem leaves the Armand Hammer Boulevard site, it will likely
become more difficult for the federal Environmental Protection Agency to
convince the multibillion-dollar corporation to make a more extensive
cleanup a priority, predicted Dr. Henry S. Cole.

Cole, an expert hired by the Alliance for a Clean Environment to closely
examine the environmental and health issues associated with the
Superfund site at OxyChem, outlined his findings and the potential
health problems facing the community in a three-hour meeting at the
Holiday Inn Express, located next to the plant.

His examination, funded through the Environmental Protection Agency and
taking two years, helped uncover previously undetected dioxin
contamination as well as other potential problems with the 12-year-old cleanup.
