ENDICOTT -- Meteorologists are the latest addition to a research team that includes chemists, geologists, statisticians and architects dealing with pollution in the heart of the village.

IBM Corp. plans to build a weather station and a network of air-monitoring systems in an area of the village where industrial solvents are being vented from beneath more than 430 structures. The plan is prompted by concerns that the vents, installed to divert subterranean gases from basements, could be adding to outdoor air pollution.

"This network is necessary to really answer the question," said Reggie Parker, a regional air engineer with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

The plan, which will be presented to a citizens group in coming weeks, calls for six monitoring stations in an area south of the former IBM plant on North Street, Parker said. They will be in sheds with antennae on top, although Parker could not say late last week how high they would reach.

In addition, a weather station will be built at an undetermined spot to track wind direction, temperature, barometric pressure and humidity as the monitoring stations collect air samples for 24 hours, every six days, Parker said. The weather station will also be in a shed.
