Salvaging the environment City aims to protect South Well Field from contamination SOUTH BEND TO BUY SALVAGE YARD By JEFF PARROTT South Bend Tribune (IN) February 15, 2005 SOUTH BEND -- The city is buying a site long used as an auto salvage yard to prevent further groundwater contamination near a well field it expects will become increasingly important. City Public Works Director Gary Gilot said chemicals leaking from vehicles crushed at Indiana Auto Parts, formerly known as Super Auto Salvage, 3300 S. Main St., have contaminated the soil at the site. City officials fear the contamination could spread to the city's nearby South Well Field if the salvage operation continues indefinitely. ... Shafer downplayed the level of contamination in the yard. The top foot or two of soil might contain gasoline and oil, but he is willing to scrape that off before vacating the site, he said. The yard does not accept mechanical equipment that, when crushed, would release more volatile types of pollutants, he said. Shafer said city officials have told him they would like a shopping center at the site, which has been an auto salvage yard since 1937. ...
