Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] Pottstown landfill " isn?t source of TCE" |
Study: Landfill isn't source of TCE Evan Brandt Pottstown Mercury (PA) February 25, 2005 It is technically impossible for the Pottstown Landfill to be the source of the carcinogenic chemical that has contaminated more than 100 wells along Farmington Avenue in Upper Pottsgrove, a specialist said this week. Timothy N. Kyper is engineering manager for GAI Consultants out of Pittsburgh, the firm that was hired by the Pottstown Land-fill Closure Co-mmittee to conduct a review of the Pottstown Landfill. While presenting his findings Wed-nesday, Kyper said his firm?s review of how groundwater flows in the region has led him to conclude that the metal solvent trichloroethylene, better known as TCE, would have to flow upstream underground in order to be the source of the contamination. "Folks, it?s technically impossible, it can?t happen," Kyper told the Landfill Closure Committee. Contained in the report?s conclusions is the observation that "groundwater flow from beneath the landfill is to the south and southwest, away from the direction of Farmington Avenue." Kyper is not alone in this opinion. The closure committee has hired an independent team of scientists, Henry S. Cole and Fred Lee, to review and comment on GAI?s work. Cole said the current evidence supports Kyper?s statement. ...
