EPA claims companies caused contamination By SARA LEITCH Easton Express-Times (PA) April 1, 2005 WHITE TWP. -- The Environmental Protection Agency has identified three companies as the sources of industrial solvents that have contaminated groundwater from Washington to Franklin Township, officials said Thursday. The EPA plans to ask those companies to help pay for work to clean up the Pohatcong Valley Superfund Site, officials said during a meeting organized by the Warren County Environmental Commission. A plan for the work should be ready by this fall, they said. "Whenever possible, we try to get the responsible parties to pay and do the cleanup," said Kimberly O'Connell, the chief of remediation for southern New Jersey. ... The environmental commission has hoped to use the superfund status as a way to limit development in the Pohatcong Valley, which was designated a planning area by the Highlands Act. The act aims to protect groundwater by confining growth to certain areas. But commission members argued that development in the valley could hurt efforts to study and remove the contamination. But the EPA representatives said they could work around whatever effect new buildings had on the groundwater, and that it was up to local officials to take a stand on development. ...
