State admits Emerson slip-ups Special Assembly hearing focuses on New York's handling of TCE contamination JENNIE DALEY Ithaca Journal (NY) April 22, 2005 ITHACA - State officials acknowledged Thursday that they need to "fix" their handling of the contaminated former Morse Chain site and their communications with affected residents. Speaking at a public hearing on the infiltration of toxic vapors into indoor air, G. Anders Carlson, director of the Division of Environmental Health Investigation for the state Department of Health, cited the need for more effective dialogue with neighbors and a more aggressive approach to pursuing remediation of the site. "I understand we need to do more to be responsive," Carlson said. "When we're dealing with older sites it doesn't feel like we're coming in new and that's why it slipped under the radar." The state started investigating possible toxins at the factory more than two decades ago. It was not until last year that officials started to address the potential scope of contamination from trichloroethene, or TCE, a potentially carcinogenic solvent used by the former chain manufacturer. ...
