EPA adds Hopewell Junction site to the Superfund List Mid-Hudson News April 27, 2005 The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency yesterday announced the listing of the Hopewell Precision Area Contamination site in Hopewell Junction to its National Priorities List of the most hazardous waste sites. EPA has already installed drinking water treatment systems at 37 homes and air ventilation systems at 42 homes to address the worst contamination at the site. "Hopewell Junction is a community where we were able to take quick action to protect people from an immediate risk," said Acting EPA Regional Administrator Kathleen Callahan. "This listing ensures that this site will continue to get the attention it needs." Debra Hall, who has single-handedly fought for this designation, credited Congresswoman Sue Kelly for backing her effort. The Hopewell Precision Area Contamination site is in a predominantly residential area, which is served by private wells and septic systems. In February 2003, EPA began sampling tap water of homes served by private wells in the vicinity of Hopewell Precision, Inc., a manufacturer of sheet metal parts and assemblies. The Agency found volatile organic compounds, including trichloroethylene, at concentrations up to 250 parts per billion, which is above the federal drinking water standard of 5 parts per billion. ... The EPA can now spend money to investigate options for cleaning up the site and for providing a permanent source of clean water to affected homes. To date, the EPA has worked at the site under an emergency program to install filters and ventilation systems that prevent exposure to hazardous chemicals. "I feel very confident that the EPA is going to do what they have to do to get us cleaned up. I have no doubt," said Debra Hall, a resident who has been actively lobbying for a thorough cleanup. ...
