Hillcrest residents want TCE info BY TOM WILBER Press & Sun-Bulletin June 11, 2005 HILLCREST -- Latest tests show unacceptable levels of trichloroethylene gases entering more buildings in this residential neighborhood, and the refusal of state health and environmental officials to release information is drawing criticism from a citizens group. The gas, coming from a subterranean plume of solvents leaching from industrial sites, is affecting "some" buildings tested in the neighborhood last heating season, according to a fact sheet released Friday by the state departments of Health and Environmental Conservation. Officials would not say this week how many buildings, of approximately 140 tested last heating season, were affected. More information will be released at a public meeting June 23 at the Chenango Valley Middle School and High School, said Rob Kinney, a spokesman for the state Department of Health. Bruce Oldfield, a Hillcrest resident and member of Hillcrest Environmental Action Team, said the delay is unacceptable. ...
