State probe of toxic sites discussed Data sought from 4 valley neighborhoods By Dan Shapley Poughkeepsie Journal June 11, 2005 MILLBROOK - The state Department of Health is investigating four mid-Hudson neighborhoods - among nine statewide - in an effort to identify what diseases may be caused by drinking contaminated water. The Shenandoah Road and Hopewell Precision Superfund sites in East Fishkill, the Mohonk Road Superfund site in Stone Ridge and the Greenbush area of Hyde Park are in the Volatile Organic Compound Registry. Homes there are served by private wells that were contaminated by industrial solvents or, in the Hyde Park case, a gasoline additive. Betsy Lewis-Michl, chief of the community exposure research section of the Center for Environmental Health, gave an overview of the program Friday in Millbrook during the Cornell University Program on Breast Cancer and Environmental Risk Factors forum. About 40 attended. Several Dutchess County residents detailed what they perceive as unusual disease clusters caused by bad water. ...
