Lenny's and Charlie's comments about bringing local people together at convenient venues beg the question. If you want frequent meetings of local people you don't need an annual national conference. Rather stage, regional or local meetings on discreet topics of interest to the local people. That's not a national brownfields conference. I would support such a concept, but I wouldn't keep the expensive national mega-conference going every single year just to accommodate that idea. As several commenters have noted, for the national conference to act as more than a "showcase" it must provide value to the members of the private sector (both for-profit and not-for-profit) who actually buy, sell, clean up, and redevelop environmentally challenged properties. It would not be inconsistent with that goal to hold the conference every other year in various venues around the country. -----Original Message----- From: Charlie Bartsch [mailto:cbartsch@nemw.org] Sent: Friday, June 17, 2005 8:21 AM To: lsiegel@cpeo.org; Brownfields Internet Forum Subject: RE: [CPEO-BIF] How frequently should theNationalBrownfieldsConferencetake place? I agree with Lenny -- local brownfield practitioners and interested parties with the most to gain from the event often have the least resources to travel to it. "Driving range" has always been a big factor in determining attendance. Norella's personal experience with the Brownfields conference may actually be an argument for more frequent meetings. She attended last year because the conference was held in her region. In fact, if I recall correctly, a large share of the attendees each year come from the region of the country (not exactly the same as the EPA region) in which the event is held. If it moved to alternate years, there would be fewer opportunities for people to attend at convenient locations.
