Ashland to test for underground vapors Chemical gases could be infiltrating basements BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) August 7, 2005 BINGHAMTON -- Work crews for Ashland will begin testing for underground chemical vapors in neighborhoods near the company's former chemical distribution center on Bevier Street later this month, a spokesman said Friday. The crews will test for vapors from trichloroethylene, or TCE, and other industrial solvents beneath Smith and Travis avenues, between the plant and the Chenango River, said Rick Gentry, project manager. Residents may have to move their cars as workers install 15 devices, called soil gas probes, under the streets. The work, scheduled to begin the week of Aug. 22, is expected to take a week or two. The pollution predates current operations at the plant, which is a warehouse for hazardous waste being shipped from the area, company spokesman Jim Vitak said. The plant, which Ashland bought in the late 1960s, was a distribution center for chemicals used by many area manufacturers before the company converted it into a hazardous waste transfer station in the late 1980s. ...
