Howell hopes to recover $3M in taxes

Homes may be built on part of 216 acres

Asbury Park Press (NJ)
August 11, 2005

HOWELL - Redevelopment of a 216-acre parcel allowing for up to 350 homes
to be built on a portion of the property is among the strategies being
considered by the township in an attempt to recover more than $3 million
in back taxes.

The property near Lakewood-Farmingdale Road is the site of the bankrupt
Frequency Engineering Laboratories. The company had manufactured
electronic military hardware since 1964 and filed for bankruptcy in 2001.

The company regularly discharged rinse waters from its metals-plating
operations into a drainage ditch behind the facility, and sampling
indicated that discharges had contaminated the soil and ground water
with volatile organic compounds and metals, according to the state
Department of Environmental Protection.
