LIU to use federal loan to rehabilitate building By Tom Venesky Wilkes-Barre Citizens Voice (PA) September 12, 2005 Luzerne Intermediate Unit 18 Executive Director Mike Ostrowski feels like he's living out of a suitcase when he goes to work each morning. Ostrowski and the LIU administration staff have been working out of the former Mackin Elementary School in Wilkes-Barre since June 2004. Their main office building on Tioga Avenue in Kingston remains closed after tests revealed levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) were found in the air last summer. The chemical is considered toxic by the Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry. It was used in the LIU building to clean printing presses. The 18 LIU administration employees have had to adapt while working from their makeshift headquarters in Mackin. There is no phone service so the employees communicate via cell phone. Space for parking, meetings and training is limited. ...
