Trucks return to Toxic Highby Daniel Gesslein September 6, 2005 Bronx News Residents of one Bronx community are fuming that high school students are still being exposed to idling diesel trucks as well as a potential toxic brew beneath their school. "We still don't know what the children are being exposed to," said Cynthia Richardson, who lives in the building over looking the school at 1440 Story Avenue. "I'm really afraid for the children." Richardson claims that teachers in the school are living in fear. Few speak out in public but several have expressed fears about the potential exposure. These teachers claim that they and parents have not been told about the site's environmental history. The land in which the School Construction Authority (SCA) built the new high school was the former site of defense manufacturing contractor Loral Electronics. The Department of Education is leasing half of the property from JJ Lyons and Associates and converted the standing office building into a school. Last year the students began attending classes at the new Soundview Educational Campus despite the detection of toxins in the soil. An independent review of the site prepared by Allegiance Resources Corporation, contracted by the SCA, stated that a sampling of the soil found chromium and mercury with levels that exceeded the state cleanup criteria. The ground water sampling found arsenic, barium, cadmium and chromium all exceeding the state cleanup level....
