TCE tainting air at Huron site Tests find vapors in 11 buildings BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) September 28, 2005 ENDICOTT -- A hazardous chemical polluting hundreds of properties in the village is also tainting air on the Huron Campus, according to tests by state environmental and health officials. The results do not suggest significant health risks to workers, but do show the need to speed up efforts to clean the pollution, health officials said. At least 11 buildings at the sprawling microelectronics plant, once home to IBM Corp., are contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) vapors above the state guideline of 5 micrograms per cubic meter of air, according to test results. They were presented Tuesday to about 10 residents, known as the Western Broome Environmental Stakeholders Coalition, at the Endicott First United Methodist Church. Samples were conducted inside, outside and beneath 36 buildings throughout the campus. Concentrations in outdoor air samples showed no significant levels of the chemicals. Samples from beneath the buildings over the most concentrated areas of pollution, such as building 18, showed TCE vapors up to 77,000 micrograms per cubic meter. ...
