Dealing with corps called 'disaster' City, county officials say cleanup efforts slow, confusing, frustrating By Chris Joyner Jackson Clarion-Ledger (MS) October 28, 2005 GULFPORT - Some coastal officials are dissatisfied with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which was contracted to clear millions of cubic yards of Hurricane Katrina debris along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. "It's a disaster dealing with the Corps of Engineers," Jackson County Supervisor John McKay said. Confusing directives, piles of red tape and a generally slow response have marked the operation, McKay said. The results are more disappointing because local officials said they were told using the Corps, rather than a private contractor, was the simpler and safer option. ?
