[It appears that tenants are not getting the same treatment as homeowners at IBM's Endicott, New York, vapor intrusion site. - LS] Hidden dangers for apartment hunters Endicott officials want landlords held accountable for installing vents BY TOM WILBER Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin (NY) October 30, 2005 ENDICOTT -- The newest tenants at 1606 Tracy St. were still cleaning and unpacking last week when they learned something about the apartment that their landlord hadn't mentioned: It is in the middle of a hazardous waste site. Special ventilation systems have been installed on other buildings in the area to protect residents from chemical vapors coming up through the ground, but not on 1606 Tracy St. or a neighboring apartment building at 1608 Tracy St., according to records from the state Department of Health. The two buildings collectively have 14 apartments that house about 40 people, including young children. ...
