'Brownfield' sites assessed, cleaned By DAVID A. VALLETTE Springfield Republican (MA) November 14, 2005 GREENFIELD - A dozen Franklin County "brownfield" sites are in various stages of assessment or cleanup. With more cooperation from property owners and an injection of federal funds, more may join the list. "It's a scary thing for property owners to let us on to their private property to see what's there," said Margaret M. Sloan, director of planning and development for the Franklin Regional Council of Governments, this week. They fear the cleanup costs they might be responsible for if something is found, she said. Sloan said that those who balk, however, may be just delaying the inevitable. They could end up having to pay the assessment costs themselves, rather than through a brownfields grant. ...
