New Orleans Environmental Quality Test Results NRDC finds dangerously high levels of contaminants in the New Orleans area. Natural Resources Defense Council December 1, 2005 Tests Show Widespread Contamination in New Orleans Soil, Neighborhoods An NRDC scientific team traveled to New Orleans in October 2005 and again in November to investigate potential health threats in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The team found dangerously high levels of mold inside homes and outdoors, posing an immediate health risk to returning residents. NRDC and other independent testers, along with the EPA, also discovered significant levels of toxic chemicals in sediments left behind by the receding waters -- a long-term health risk requiring intensive cleanup. The NRDC team also examined levels of particulate air pollution and concentrations of endotoxin, an airborne toxin created by bacteria. Federal officials have failed to monitor adequately for these health risks and have neglected to warn the people of New Orleans of the threat to their safety. The [pages linked at the web page below] present detailed test results, as well as a health advisory and cleanup recommendations for individuals and government agencies.
