NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal and state agencies on Friday sought to quell
fears that New Orleans was turned into a contamination zone by Hurricane
Katrina by emphasizing few risks were found in the soil, air or water.

"We're pleased to be able to say that residents can return to the
affected areas, that tourists can return to the affected areas," said
Andy Kopplin, the executive director of the Louisiana Recovery Authority.

Friday's announcement that New Orleans and the rest of southern
Louisiana are safe to return to was the latest round in an ongoing
disagreement between environmental groups and government agencies over
the effects of the hurricanes on the environment.
