DuPont assails hazards study
Findings of Sierra Club research called irresponsible

DELISLE - A recent soil and sediment study conducted around the DuPont 
DeLisle plant by Wilma Subra and Altamont Environmental Laboratory 
includes wrong and misleading information, the head of the plant and a 
representative of another laboratory said Wednesday.

Subra's report, sponsored by the environmental group Sierra Club, "is 
both wrong and very inaccurate and irresponsible," said plant manager 
Pat Nichols. "If the Sierra Club had taken the time to look at the 
findings carefully, they would have seen numerous problems with the 
results, as we have."

Subra, a Louisiana chemist, said the point of analyzing samples was not 
to show where metals and dioxin were above government limits. Instead, 
she said, the point was to show where concentrations of compounds were 
higher to spur either the government or DuPont to complete more testing.

"The sample we took adjacent to the facility had higher concentrations 
of dioxin than the other two samples taken farther away," she said. "It 
is keeping the issue out in front and hopefully they will do some more 
studies to see the extent of the contamination."
