News Release Michigan Economic Development Corporation January 17, 2006 Granholm Announces Expansion of Heat Controller Inc. in Jackson Company to Revitalize Site, Create 10 New Jobs Governor Jennifer M. Granholm today announced that Heat Controller Inc. will expand in Jackson as a result of state brownfield tax incentives approved by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. The project is expected to generate more than $1.5 million in private investment and create up to 10 new jobs. "This is a win-win situation for Heat Controller and the city of Jackson," Granholm said. "The project will put the property back on the tax rolls and allow the company to continue to grow and create good jobs in Michigan." Heat Controller will use state and local tax capture valued at $199,175 to demolish existing structures and redevelop the former Overhead Conveyor site which is adjacent to the company's current facility. Heat Controller will build an 18,750-square-foot warehouse expansion and parking lot. "The city of Jackson Brownfield Redevelopment Authority was able to partner on this project because of federal EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) assessment grant funding," Mayor Martin J. Griffin said. "This project demonstrates the value and importance of federal and state incentive programs, without which contaminated properties would continue to lie dormant and blighted." Headquartered in Jackson, Heat Controller distributes contract-manufactured residential and commercial heating and cooling equipment including furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps. The company's expansion is one of three economic development projects the Governor announced today. In all, they are expected to create a total of 1,615 Michigan jobs. "I am proud of what Michigan's brownfield redevelopment program has accomplished statewide," MEDC President and CEO James Epolito said. "This is yet another success in our efforts to transform challenged properties into community assets." In her 2005 State of the State address, Granholm emphasized the importance of making Michigan a global economic powerhouse in the 21st century. Since January 2005 the Governor and the MEDC have announced the creation or retention of more than 66,000 jobs as a result of targeted assistance provided by the MEDC. The Michigan Economic Development Corporation, a partnership between the state and local communities, promotes smart economic growth by developing strategies and providing services to create and retain good jobs and a high quality of life.
