State to press CAE on pollution cleanup
DEC seeks $500,000 over contamination in Hillcrest

HILLCREST - The state will pursue legal action if necessary against CAE Electronics to recoup $500,000 in Superfund money to clean trichloroethylene pollution that has contaminated about 80 properties in the neighborhood, an official with the state Department of Environmental Conservation said Friday.

The agency has data identifying CAE's former plant on Nowlan Road as a source of a subterranean plume of vapors that have entered neighborhood basements through a process called vapor intrusion, said Mary Jane Peachey, a regional engineer with the DEC.

"We have sufficient information and data to support pursuing cost recovery, which is what we will do," Peachey said. State law does not require all sources of pollution be identified before a company is held accountable.
