Subject: | [CPEO-BIF] CPEO events in New England |
(Please excuse duplicate postings/messages.) CPEO's Brownfields Assistance Project* is planning two events in New England this Fall, and we're looking for environmental justice and other community activists to work with us to ensure that they are useful to people within the region. --- First, we plan a regional workshop in Worcester, Massachusetts on a Saturday (TBD) in September. The workshop, co-sponsored by Worcester Community Project Center,** will have two sections: 1) In the morning, we will have educational sessions on two or three topics, such as "Building Homes on Brownfields" or "Restoring Greenspace in Urban Environments." 2) In the afternoon, we will collectively develop brief position papers on the topics discussed during the morning educational sessions. Working with volunteers, we will refine those papers in time for the national Brownfields conference November 13-15, 2006 in Boston. --- Second, just before the national Brownfields conference at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center (November 13-15), we will convene the annual National Environmental Justice/Community Brownfields Caucus. Unlike recent years, we will meet BEFORE the conference, 7 pm to 10 pm on Sunday evening, November 12, at the conference venue. This will make it easier for community activists to attend, but it means that we will need help notifying potential participants before they come to the conference. At the Caucus meeting, we will finalize the position papers developed at the Worcester workshop for distribution to the larger conference. CPEO is also working to ensure that the Brownfields 2006 technical program includes EJ and community perspectives and addresses issues of concern to our constituency. Please let us know if you want to help plan either of these events, and/or forward this message to activists in your area. Lenny Siegel and Bob Hersh CPEO * The Center for Public Environmental Oversight provides information, technical assistance, and training to community groups across the United States on brownfields revitalization, military environmental issues, and other environmental topics. For more information, see http://www.cpeo.org. ** The Worcester Community Project Center (WCPC) develops projects around five core competencies: 1) planning for community sustainability, 2) green energy and building design, 3) economic development, 4) historic, cultural, and environmental preservation and outreach, and 5) environmental justice. --
